How Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology Helped Phoenix Enjoy Everyday Life
When your child faces challenges with movement, communication or sensory processing, finding the right support can make everyday life feel easier.
For Tara’s family, occupational therapy and speech pathology have helped her son build new skills over the past three years. With support from his therapy team, he has learned to take part in more activities, communicate more clearly and engage more confidently with the people around him.
This is Phoenix’s story.
Phoenix was born with a major heart condition and required open heart surgery. Following surgery, he was left with a mild brain impairment and experiences sensory processing challenges.
His mum, Tara, wanted support that would help him work towards meaningful goals and make everyday activities easier.
Through occupational therapy and speech pathology, Phoenix has been supported with practical strategies that focus on his individual needs and help him build skills over time.
One of Phoenix’s biggest challenges was sensory processing.
There were many textures he found difficult to touch. Sand, for example, was something he avoided because it made him gag.
His occupational therapists introduced different sensory experiences in a gradual and supportive way. Together, they explored a variety of textures, including rice, dry pasta and wet pasta.
These activities helped Phoenix become more comfortable touching different objects while working towards his therapy goals.
His therapy also included movement activities. Tara explains that the team worked with him using activities such as swinging, while also providing ideas that the family could continue at home.
This combination of therapy sessions and home activities has helped Phoenix become more comfortable with different sensory experiences and movement.
As Phoenix became more willing to explore different textures and activities, everyday life became easier for his family.
Tara says they are now able to enjoy more family outings without worrying as much about what Phoenix may or may not be able to do.
Being able to participate in more activities has opened up new experiences for the whole family.
This reflects one of the goals of occupational therapy: helping children build skills that support participation in everyday life.
Alongside occupational therapy, Phoenix has also been working with speech pathologists.
When he first started therapy, he had a speech delay.
One area he continues to work on is learning how to put words into complete sentences. Tara explains that Phoenix often missed the “in-between” words, so therapy has focused on helping him develop sentence structure.
These sessions have supported his communication in ways that are meaningful for everyday life.
Communication is about more than speaking clearly.
For Phoenix, speech pathology has also supported his ability to engage with others and express himself more effectively.
Tara says that at school he has learned to use his words more instead of relying on his actions.
She has also noticed improvements in his emotional regulation and his ability to interact with other people during everyday activities.
These changes have helped him participate more successfully both at school and in daily life.
Phoenix has now been attending therapy for three years.
Looking back, Tara says the changes have been significant.
She has seen improvements in his sensory processing, communication, emotional regulation and participation in everyday activities. She also shares that there has been a lot of improvement over the past six months.
For Phoenix’s family, therapy has focused on building skills step by step while supporting goals that matter most to him.
Every child is different, and therapy should reflect their individual strengths, needs and goals.
