Pre-writing and Handwriting Program Assessments

Pre-writing and Handwriting Program Assessments

Help your child build skills for writing

Writing involves many skills working together, and every child develops them differently. Some children may be building foundations such as sitting comfortably for table-top activities, developing hand strength, controlling a pencil or drawing lines and shapes. Others may need support with letter formation, sizing, spacing, pencil pressure or writing speed.

Handwriting support that focuses on everyday writing

Allied Kids Therapy offer two focused, one-on-one Occupational Therapy programs. Our Pre-Writing Program is for children developing foundational skills for early writing, while our Handwriting Program is for children who can already write and need targeted support with their handwriting skills.

Both programs include five focused Occupational Therapy sessions, with practical and engaging activities tailored to the skills your child is developing.

Your child might enjoy drawing but still be developing pencil control, hand strength or early drawing skills. Or they may already be writing but find letter formation, sizing, spacing, pencil pressure or writing speed tricky.

Our Pre-Writing Program supports skills that contribute to handwriting, including attention, posture, hand strength, fine motor skills, pencil grasp and control, and early drawing skills.

Our Handwriting Program supports children who can already write, focusing on areas such as pencil control, letter formation, legibility, sizing, spacing, writing speed and pencil pressure.

Both programs use practical, child-centred support to build skills for everyday drawing and writing activities at kinder, Prep, school and home.

The Pre-Writing Program supports children who are building the foundational skills they need before and alongside handwriting.

Session may focus on:

  • Attention and engagement during table-top activities
  • Comfortable sitting posture and postural control
  • Hand strength and fine motor skills
  • Pencil grasp and control
  • Using both hands together
  • Drawing lines, shapes and simple patterns
  • Early drawing and writing skills
  • Practical strategies to continue at home

The program gives your child focused opportunities to practise these skills through engaging activities, helping them participate more comfortably in early writing activities at kinder, Prep and home.

Let’s help make handwriting more manageable

Learning to write is a process, and your child doesn’t need to develop every skill at once.

Whether they’re building the foundations for writing or already putting words on the page, our Pre-Writing and Handwriting Programs provide focused, one-on-one Occupational Therapy support based on the skills they’re developing.

Through practical activities and strategies that can continue at home, we work alongside you and your child to support the skills they use for everyday drawing and writing activities at kinder, Prep, school and home.
